Power grids

Electrical equipment utilized in power grids encompasses a variety of components, including distribution boxes, circuit breakers, switches, inverters, sensors, instruments, actuators, and lightning arresters, among others.

  • AC distribution box

This system employs transformers to lower high voltage levels and incorporates circuit breakers and protective devices. It is currently the most prevalent distribution system in use.

  • Compact substation (Switchgear)

A compact substation is a self-contained unit that consolidates all essential elements of a traditional substation into a more compact design. It features high-voltage switchgear along with distribution transformers and low-voltage distribution equipment.

Circuit breakers play a crucial role in various segments of the power system, including power generation, transmission, distribution, and load management. They are vital for ensuring the stability and safety of electrical systems. As integral components of the power grid, circuit breakers safeguard electrical systems from potential damage and hazards by interrupting the current during faults, short circuits, and overloads.

  •  Air circuit breakers (ACB)

utilize air to extinguish arcs and are commonly found in distribution systems, substations, and the oil and gas industries. ACBs are designed to safely manage power distribution in networks up to 15kV, protecting transformers, feeders, and other essential components from electrical faults. They also play a key role in maintaining safety standards in refineries and gas processing facilities.

  • Miniature circuit breakers (MCB)

are electromechanical devices that automatically close a circuit when they detect anomalies such as overcurrent or short circuits. MCBs are typically used in low-voltage applications and are rated for currents up to 125A.

  • Residual current circuit breakers (RCCB)

are designed to protect individuals from electric shock by detecting current imbalances and tripping when such imbalances occur. RCCBs are generally employed in circuits with loads exceeding 10A and voltages up to 1000V.

  • Molded case circuit breaker (MCCB)

are three-pole devices that disconnect the circuit in response to current or temperature overloads. They are commonly used in high-current circuits.

Circuit breakers are also categorized by their voltage ratings, which can be high, medium, or low. Each type is specifically engineered for particular applications and operates under varying conditions to ensure the safety and reliability of the electrical system.
